Students--write a story or poem that expresses pride in African American accomplishments and culture, or write about a famous or not-so-famous African American who means a great deal to America or to you.

--Open to students in grades 3-12
--Deadline to request forms is February 1st
*When requesting forms for your classroom, please include the number of forms and which school and grade level you represent.

3-5th Grade
6-8th Grade
9-12th Grade

3 winners will be chosen from each category, as well as Business' Top Picks and Honorable Mentions

FALL WRITING CONTEST
Entrants will write a short story on a topic provided by The Central Texas Reading Council. Winners will be chosen by grade level and excerpts from the winning entries will be published in November 2010! The Council will submit winning entries to the Young Authors and Illustrators Contest. Contest rules and deadline will be distributed in September
LETTERS TO SANTA
Teachers must sign up their classrooms to participate in this contest.
In conjunction with the expert Advertising staff at the Killeen Daily Herald, students letters are chosen for print in the Killeen Daily Herald's Letters to Santa Tabloid.
DESIGN-A-CARD:Valentine's Day
Entrants will use their imagination and creativity to design a card for Valentine's Day. Details about this contest will be distributed in January 2011, and winners will be published February 7, 2011.

CELEBRATE AFRICA-CELEBRATE AMERICA WRITING CONTEST
Entrants will write a story or poem that expresses pride in African American accomplishments and culture, or write about a famous or not-so-famous African American who means a great deal to America. Winners will be chosen by grade level and excerpts from the winning entries will be published February 21, 2011. Contest rules and deadline will be distributed in January.
DESIGN-AN-AD
Entrants will use their imagination and creativity to design ads for local businesses to be run in the newspaper! Details about this contest will be distributed in January 2011, and winners will be published in March.
POEM IN YOUR POCKET CONTEST
Entrants will write a poem no longer than 10 lines. Winners will be chosen from five different categories. Winning Poems will be published April 14, 2011.Contest rules and deadline will be distributed in March.
