“I have a special education class. We use the newspaper in a variety of ways. We use the grocery store ads for nutrition as well as money concepts. I laminate all the mini pages and use them over and over for subject matters. We highlight our letter shape and number of the week in the newspaper. We also cut out, mount and re-use cultural items. It is endless what we utilize our daily newspaper for in the classroom. Thank you so much for your support.”
-Angela Thomas, Trimmier Elementary School
“Thank you, our class has really enjoyed our papers this year. We use the paper to enhance our reading comprehension.”
-Lisa Teich, Manor Middle School
“Thanks a lot. My kids love having the newspaper every day!”
-Katherine Bramanti, Brookhaven Elementary School
“My first graders & I primarily use the Tuesday edition of the Killeen Daily Herald to keep up with current events. The students enjoy the "kid's section", especially the dot to dot activities. Students also use the newspaper to circle given assignments such as sight words, contractions, compound words, etc. Sponsors - Thank you for providing us with these education opportunities!”
-Janet Machen, first grade, Kline Whitis Elementary School
“I use the paper to teach current events and Language Arts. I love getting the paper on Fridays and being able to expose my students to a different genre and get them in the habit of reading the newspaper. Many of my students would never have the opportunity to read a newspaper if it weren't for your kind sponsors making it possible for us to get them each week. Thank you for your support in education!”
-Sheila M. Pea, 4th grade, Hanna Springs Intermediate, Lampasas
“My students use the newspaper to complete their current event assignment. The students select an article from the paper, read the article, summarize it and present it orally in front of the class. Reading the newspaper helps them stay in touch with the world news and more importantly for them, the local news. A lot of my students have expressed their new found interest in keeping up with the news.”
-E. Ortiz, Jr., Criminal Justice, Killeen High School
“I teach Journalism at Shoemaker High. In our classroom, we use the Herald on a daily basis as a warm-up to writing stories as well as aiding in our current event discussions. We have a designated text for the course, but as the students learn terms, my students are to identify those terms throughout the paper. For example, when they learn terms such as lead or human interest story is, they then are to identify them in published works. I have found it applicable in every chapter of our text to show the students an example instead of simply defining the terms.”
-Farrah M.Dunaway, Journalism, Shoemaker High School
“We use it for discussions on current events. We frequently go through and highlight words that correspond with our language arts skills. One day we might highlight all the verbs, the next day multiple meaning words, and the next day examples of cause and effect. We play math detective where they have to search through the paper and find certain math terms or examples. We also cut out numbers or ads and make our own math word problems. They always have a newspaper in their desk and they truly enjoy doing activities with it. Thank you so much for giving teachers the opportunity to use such a great resource like your newspaper. Keep up the good work!”
-
Tiffany Barrera, Fourth Grade, Iduma Elementary
“I use it for current articles related to health. I read them and post them on bulletin board.”
-Richard Romeo, Health, Killeen High School
“I use the newspapers in every thing I teach. My students will epically put the papers to good use for our up and coming planner. Our planner will focus on writing and all that comes with it. I teach 3rd grade at Iduma Elementary.”
-Donna Galli, Iduma Elementary
“I have 13 students who use the Killeen Daily Herald to learn how to summarize information in long articles. We are also about use the newspapers to examine writing styles to prepare to write newspaper style book reports. I think it will be fun. When we finish reading the newspapers we reuse them for paper mache activities and other projects. The students love to do the mini pages as well, as an extra treat. They loved finding their poems and quotes in the edition about being a good friend. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn about being good writers and to help us become better readers.”
-Annemarie Victory, Oveta Culp Hobby Elementary
“My class uses the newspaper for job search information, Job knowledge Information, and practice reading about things that are going on in the city, state, and world. Since I teach a Vocational Class the newspaper is a very good tool for my
classroom of 11th and 12th Graders.”
-Richard W. Maze, Vocational Adjustment Coordinator, Shoemaker High School
“We teach grades 7-12. The papers are used for reading, research, writing prompts, current events, practice looking for employment and interviewing for the positions, vocabulary (Crosswords, Word jumble, reading), and for just entertainment. The students read selections and then present their thoughts on the topic. The summarizing of the articles also gives them practice for the TAKS writing test. The papers have been extremely helpful and are greatly appreciated.”
-Marcus Patterson, Phoenix Center, Lampasas I.S.D.
“My students use the newspaper in a variety of ways. First it is introduced when we learn genres, where is falls under the information genre. When teaching main idea, I cut titles apart from shorter stories and the children match the titles to the stories. When teaching facts and opinions we use advertisements to locate opinion words and facts. When teaching math place value I cut out car ad, students glue these on their paper and write out the amounts, then they circle the number in the thousands place, underline the digit in the hundreds place and so forth. Lastly I use the newspapers as a Learning Station for reading. One week they may cut and paste verbs or nouns, or they may do scavenger hunts where they look for various things. (something you put on a hamburger, or an athlete's quote.) My students and I love using the newspaper in the classroom and we also look forward to sharing the Mini Page.”
-Dolores Cameron, 3rd Grade, Mountain View Elementary
“I am First Sergeant George Jones, the second year JROTC Teacher at Harker Heights High School JROTC Program. The mission of our program is "To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens." The daily use of the Killeen Daily Newspapers helps me with this mission. The second's year's student is also the key leaders within the program. During this year, the cadets are placed into leadership positions from a team leader (training and supervising 3-5 cadet) to the Battalion's Command Sergeant Major. These cadets are also requiring attending cadet and leader of the month boards, promotion boards, etc. The cadets must have knowledge in the area of current events that concern their community, state, country and world. The Killeen Newspapers is the foundation for these students to obtain this information. The papers are also used as an aid for researching different topic that is briefed in class. In addition, the newspapers are an extension to the provided information that is provided by the district.”
-George Jones, 1SG (r) U.S. Army JROTC, Harker Heights High School
“My class absolutely loves the newspapers that we get on Tuesday mornings. I use the paper for different things. My favorite is cutting out the pictures and using them to figure out the cause and effect. You should read what the students come up with. I also use it to find prefix and suffix words. We also use the Kids page; the students take them home and share with their families.”
-Mrs. Ellis, 3rd Grade, Ira Cross Jr., Elementary
“I teach a variety of business classes and use the KDH to help the students keep up with current events and other news that may be important when relating to the material that is covered in class. I always tape up the front page and the cover page of the sports section. At first, I didn't realize how much the students looked forward to reading them until one day I forgot to pick up our copy of the newspaper and hang it up. I had so many students wonder where "the paper" was that I don't dare forget again! Thank you!”
-John Eisenhour, Business Educator 9th -12th, Harker Heights High School
“Students use the newspaper in my class when we are doing the unit on Government. They are required to prove that we as Americans have the rights and freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights as well as show that the branches of Gov. exist in our country. We also use the papers to prove our officials are elected.”
-Renae Devers, 7th Grade Texas History, Eastern Hills Middle School
“My copies are well used as I use them in many different classes. I use them in Journalism to teach the parts of a paper and to teach the terms. The students keep a journal with examples of each term cut from the paper. We also use them for research for articles. In social studies I have the students do current events. We keep a bulletin board highlighting topics in the news. I use them for charts, graphs, and time lines, too. In art, they become our blotters to place our paintings on so that we do not have to clean our tables. So, by the end of the day, they have been well used. Those not splattered with paint are saved to make paper mache with for our projects. The last thing that happens to those, poor well used papers is the recycle bin. I appreciate having the papers. They are a plus for my classroom. Thank you so much.”
-Pat Guthneck, Florence High School
“The Newspaper is a very valuable teaching tool. I use the paper in very different ways. I use it to keep my students aware of current events. The Mini page on Tuesdays is very useful; we got a lot out of the series about the Constitution. After we get all the information we can get out of the Killeen Daily Herald, we recycle.”
-Marcos A. Nieves, FASP, Killeen High School
“The NIE are a compliment to my classes. I teach 8th grade Career Investigations. We use the ad section more than anything else in the newspaper. However, I do have the other sections for current events not only for my class but for those that need it for other classes. With the ads students learn how to read the section first (how it is broken down and what the various abbreviations stand for). Once they have mastered this, they go job hunting. They look for a job that requires little education and then those that require more education than just a high school diploma. Once students have gathered the information on these jobs, they then go through a mock process where they complete a simple application, type a resume, create a cover letter, and mock interview. All of this is possible because NIE allows me to have the newspaper.”
-Ms. CJ Lucksinger, Career Investigations Teacher, Audie Murphy Middle School
“We look for spelling words, cut and paste to make new words, recycle into new paper, read the Mini pages, and when working on numbers we look through the ads.”
-Brenda Davenport, 1st grade, Reeces Creek Elementary
“We use them primarily for spelling and reading. I teach 2nd grade so this is a new form of literacy to them. Some of them have never touched a newspaper and don't know what ALL is in a newspaper and how valuable they are, so we really enjoy getting them! Each week my kids have a list of new words with a certain spelling pattern and they search the newspaper for as many as they can find. We also use them for building fluency, especially the smaller articles. My kids also really like the Mini Page! At the end of the day, I let them take it home so they can share it with their family.”
-Erin Huffman, 2nd Grade, Nolanville Elementary
“NIE has provided several newspapers to my students throughout the school year. Reading newspapers in class assists the students with feeling connected in our community. Students also learn and appreciate the value of written communication. We use the newspapers to demonstrate all aspects of effective writing. Thank you so much!”
-Nancy Duran, 7th Grade Language Arts, Liberty Hill Middle School
“I teach 6th grade science at Smith Middle School on Fort Hood. We greatly appreciate the newspapers. We use the newspaper to keep current with science discoveries and issues, collect the weather data to analyze trends. In activity class, we discuss current events plus state and national issues that affect us locally.”
-Gail Chandler, Science Educator, Smith Middle School
“Hello, I use the newspapers to teach reading concepts, in particular, the author's purpose and point of view. The newspapers are great for this because all aspects are covered. The paper is to inform, to entertain, to express and the persuade. The students also study summarization, which is what most newspaper articles are in relationship to a particular event that has taken place.”
-Kovettia Powell, 4th grade, Cedar Valley Elementary
“I am in charge if ISS (In School Suspension). The students I have need the papers for various assignments given by their teachers for extra credit projects. Since they are not in the classroom, I am pleased to be able to supply them with the materials, so they might improve their grades.”
-Coach Koehler, Shoemaker High School
“In my class I use them to emphasize things learned from Reading, like main idea, summarizing an article, predictions, fact and opinions, etc. I continue to use them for Science when we talk about weather, and how to read the weather map that is in the paper. We also use them to discuss the things going on in the world, and compare/contrast history to present day. The newspapers really benefit the kids at our school because most kids don't have access to newspapers but at school, and some have never even handled a paper or how to navigate through a paper. Some of my kids don't have books at home to read on their free time, so they take a newspaper with them to have something to read. My students love when we get them!”
-Felicia Flagg, 4th Grade, Ira Cross Elementary
“The Killeen Daily Herald newspapers are a great resource for my classroom. We have discussed each section of the paper and what we would find in that section. Most of my students had never looked through a newspaper and were very excited when I pointed out all the information that could be found. When I teach a unit on business and finances, we will use the classifieds and various ads as a "real world" tool. A big thank you once again to our sponsor for making the newspapers possible for our classroom!”
-Bev Miracle, Third Grade Social Studies, CR Clements / Hollie Parsons Elementary
“I am so appreciative to those who sponsor my students to receive the Killeen Daily Herald! I don't know where to begin in telling how it benefits my classroom. I use the paper in a variety of ways. I will describe just a few ways we utilize the newspaper. My students are able to see different forms of writing by reading articles. Editorials are really helpful when teaching persuasive writing. They are also able to see how different writers present information in different styles of writing. I also used the weather section to teach a unit in science. The newspaper helped them to understand fronts, humidity, and a vast number of things in regards to weather. Right now my students are reading and presenting articles where people take action (positive and negative). They have to describe the action and how it affects the individual, community, nation, or world. My students love doing the research and presenting their articles. We are learning a great deal from the newspaper. Thank you so much for your support!”
-Keisha Davis, 5th Grade, Iduma Elementary School
“I use my newspapers to word build. I will provide the words on paper and the students will need to hunt for the letters in the newspaper to build that particular word. This activity will allow the students to learn words and become independent writers!! It's very challenging and my students love it!!! They are always eager for more.”
-Mrs. Finley, A Proud Kindergarten Teacher, Saegert Elementary
“This year my first graders have been using the newspapers that were donated to search for words we are reviewing in class, to build words or sort them phonetically. It has been a really useful tool that I can use during center time or word building. My students enjoy using the newspapers to search for words and learn about current events as well!”
-Paige Gawryszewski, Skipcha Elementary
“I use the newspapers in my classroom so that the students can read a variety of texts. I teach fifth grade so reading is such a big testing area. This gives students practice seeing nonfiction selections and answering the five W's which is similar to what they do when they summarize a story or book. It is interesting to see students get the newspaper to read from my reading center instead of books. Thanks for this opportunity!”
-Meredith Yarborough, Fifth Grade, Brookhaven Elementary
“My government classes use the paper often, especially following Supreme Court decisions. My economics classes use the paper extensively when we are doing a unit on personal finance. They compare prices on everything from meat sales to automobile prices. They use the papers to check prices and determine what it will cost to move out on their own. Thank you.”
-TJ Pederson, Killeen High School
“Having newspapers in a fifth grade classroom is invaluable. I am able to begin to teach the class global awareness. In fifth grade students are beginning to understand that global events do affect their lives and they need to be aware of the world around them. We also use the newspapers to teach reading skills such as summary, main idea, fact and opinion, and so much more. Having a weekly newspaper allows my students to practice their reading skills using "real-world" media. They have come to look forward to our Friday paper. Thank you for bringing the world into fifth grade!”
-Karey Pierce, Fifth Grade, Nolanville Elementary
“My second graders LOVE reading the Mini Page! We use newspapers each Tuesday during our Reading Learning Stations. We've made blends and digraph cut-outs, vowel pattern charts, and alphabetical order assignments. We sure appreciate the Killeen Evening Lions Club for sponsoring our class this year!”
-Jayne Doxsey, Second Grade, Sugar Loaf Elementary
“To increase reading comprehension, I have the students find articles which relate to the vocabulary words that we are currently studying. For one project in particular, the students found articles that described the four different types of love. Each student then made a poster. The poster contained the article, vocabulary word and other symbols and clippings from magazines to represent a visual of their favorite type of love. Thank you for supporting Education in the Classroom.”
-Ms.Anderson,BSFCS, FCS Teacher, Copperas Cove High School
“In our classroom, the students tear into the mini-page to read the articles and do the activities on the back page. I have also used the newspapers to emphasize the advertisements for the Design An Advertisement contest. The students took note on how ads are written and spaced. We have also used the papers for dictionary word searches. The students look for words they do not know and then look them up in the dictionaries in our classroom.”
-Christa Griffith, 3rd Grade, Montague Village Elementary
“I am a third grade teacher and I use the newspaper for many activities in my classroom. After talking about a part of speech, like verbs, we will get out our newspapers and try to underline as many verbs as we can on the first page. Then, for homework, I ask them to find 10 more verbs to share with the class the next day. I have an "Adventures in Newspapers" center that my students visit to brush up on skills such as finding the author, author's purpose, parts of speech, adjectives they can use in future writing assignments, etc. When we discuss the temperature we will check it using the newspaper. The possibilities are endless!!”
-Kristin Coffield, 3rd Grade, Skipcha Elementary
“My students love getting their newspaper every Tuesday. We play a word hunt game where the kids look for word wall words they have already earned. They get to use a highlighter and highlight all the words they know. Sometimes I'll call out a word for them to find and the search begins---they love it since it's harder to find a called out word than just finding them on their own. Afterwards, we get to read the Mini-page. Thanks so much for our newspapers--my students and I greatly appreciate it!”
-Isabel Malone, 1st Grade, Timber Ridge Elementary
“We use newspapers in the classroom regularly. We search for our spelling words and highlight them or cut them out. I believe it helps the students know that there are other forms of literature than just books. They also learn the layout of the paper as they search. We also use pictures for some of our projects. Thanks NIE!!!”
-Mrs. Self, Peebles Elementary
“I work with students who struggle with reading. We receive newspapers on Monday and Tuesday. The newspapers provide us with the opportunity to use current event and topics of interest in the community to facilitate the development of language arts and comprehension skills that my students struggle with. We use the articles to practice finding the main idea, sequencing and summarization. We also use them to identify grammar and punctuation elements we are focusing on. The students particularly like reading and exploring the student pages and the sports section. It is also used by some students when we have a requirement to read silently. Having newspapers in the classroom is a useful tool to encourage reluctant readers to stay focused on their particular comprehension needs.”
-Ms. Washington, 6th, 7th, 8th reading, Nolan Middle School
“I receive papers on Thursdays and Fridays. I am a coach, so I take the Future Stars pages out and have them laminated and hung in my classroom and out in the hallway. The kids love to see their names in the paper, and they love to point it out to their friends. Additionally, I have a class of 8th graders that come to me for 20 minutes before they go to lunch; they enjoy catching up with the current news. Thank you very much for providing this wonderful service to the kids.”
-Coach Frank Rechtorovic, Rancier Middle School
“I use the newspapers to assign current events to my students. I also clip out the political cartoons for my use when teaching how to read political cartoons. I really appreciate having this resource available to my students. Many of my students do not receive newspapers at home.”
-Deirdre Daniels, 6th Grade Social Studies, Palo Alto Middle School
“In my classroom, we use the newspaper to do the following activities: to keep up with what is going on in our world, to discuss the difference between a fact and an opinion, to circle nouns or verbs or adjectives on the front page, to read the comics, to discuss the upcoming weather, to decide which movies are appropriate to go see, to discuss what's happening in sports, and to do The Mini Page. My class loves to do the activities in The Mini Page.”
-Brenda S. Graley, FACES/CARD class (Sp. Ed.), Copperas Cove Jr. High School
“My class uses the Killeen Daily Herald with all subjects. In reading class we read articles to discuss the difference between non-fiction and fiction, to summarize, and to find the main idea. During language Arts we search for proper and common nouns. In math we graph sports scores, find the mean, median and mode for weather temperatures over a period of time, and to compare the speeds and lengths recorded in different field events in the sports section. The Killeen Daily Herald comes in handy to discuss different scientific articles that appear in the paper. My students love using the paper because it is a break from the textbook. It gets them more engaged in their learning. They look forward to the paper on Tuesday because they also enjoy the Mini-Page.”
-Michael Hellinger, 5th Grade, Mountain View Elementary School
“I use the school newspaper on Tuesdays only. I have a TAG/Cluster class, so we use it in many ways from problem solving using ads, finding details, main idea, summary and with the mini page we read it in detail, highlight important information, get into groups and answer comprehension questions using higher order thinking. The Mini Page always seems to have important info on history, holidays, biographies and authors which is very helpful in my teachings.”
-Linda Brashear, 2nd Grade TAG/Cluster, Bellaire Elementary
“Thank you so much for the weekly delivery of the Killeen Daily Herald to our class. My third graders enjoy learning about our world, current events, and sports while reading the newspaper! My students are learning the parts of the newspaper such as the title, headlines, captions, opinion page, classifieds, the various sections of the newspaper, and of course, the comics, puzzles, and the Mini Page. We have used the newspaper for "scavenger hunts", for example to find plurals, or nouns, or advertisements. We have contrasted facts and opinions, and we have learned about the writing components of who, what, when, where, and why. Thank you so much for enhancing our learning by providing us with such a valuable resource. Our Tuesday lessons are more interesting and our students are more engaged in learning, thanks to Newspapers in Education and the Killeen Daily Herald.”
-Ellen Strauss, Third Grade, Nolanville Elementary
“I teach 4th Grade Talented and Gifted. Finding resources that are both challenging and appropriate for my students is difficult. The Killeen Daily Herald helps fill this need. Our class uses it to see real life examples of fiction and nonfiction genres, reading for comprehension, as a springboard to debates about articles found in the paper, and for information on current events in our area. I appreciate the people and businesses that have donated to make this resource available to us.”
-Lacy Freeman, 4th Grade TAG teacher, Duncan Elementary
“Students look at business ads as well as the classifieds to determine what is fact and opinion. They discuss the purpose of the different sections of the paper. The KDH is also used to build vocabulary. These are just a few of the many ways the KDH is used in my classroom.”
-Belinda Smith, 6th Grade Reading, Copperas Cove Junior High School
"I proudly use the Killeen Daily Herald newspaper in my classroom to
help my students experience real-life activities relating to Math,
Reading, Science & Art. For Reading & Math my students use the
newspaper to have the opportunity like a boy in our reading book by
the name of Mike. Mike´s father is the grocery store owner. My
students were given a writing list sheet to find items in their paper
that they would shop for. The students were required to locate, cut
out pictures and write items on their list. For Science, my students
use the newspaper to find pictures of living and non-living
organisms. My students cut out pictures of clothing that should be
worn according to the four seasons. My students use pictures from
the newspaper to work with addition and subtraction roblems. The
newspaper benefits my students to help enhance their skills."
-Mary Laudermilk, 1st Grade, Ira Cross Elementary
