"Thank you to so much for this wonderful program! Receiving the KDH newspapers on a daily basis allows me to explore writing in a more real world fashion. Whether they're for my English classes or journalism class, all are applicable. We study diction in headlines, syntax in articles and photographical art. I have them particularly study and explore lead
paragraphs and endings. These features allow journalism students the understanding of how to open an article whether in a hard news fashion or more feature-like style. The students appreciate just reading them as well. Many do not receive the paper at home and this is another way to keep them informed on current events. We get into many discussions because of their reading. Thank you again for offering the program to schools. It's invaluable."

"The students in the LIFE Class at CCJHS love to get the newspaper. We get the Killeen Daily Herald on Tuesday so we can do the Mini Page. We read the articles together, do the Mini Spy, and the Word Search. The students always want to hear the Mini Jokes. We use the rest of the newspaper to discuss current events, to compare facts on the front page to editorials on the opinion page, to check out which movies are age appropriate, to look over the evening TV schedule and discuss bedtimes vs late night television, to find out what the weather is going to be in Texas and locally, to discuss why the Killeen Daily Herald is our paper, to find parts of speech in the articles, to discuss ads, and to enjoy reading the comics. When appropriate, we have discussed the Dear Abby letters. After we are finished with the newspapers, we recycle them in
CCJHS' recycle program."
Brenda Graley, Copperas Cove Junior High School, LIFE Class
"My class and I love to receive Newspapers in Education. The students look forward to "Current Event" time. They get to select an article from the paper and answer who, what, where, when and why was the article written questions. Then, they write a summary of the article using the information. One of our lowest tested objectives for TAKS is summarization. This greatly helps the students with summarization and allows them to see what is happening in their community. The students have more pride in where they live and are aware of what is going on in the world around them. They have learned so much about how newspapers are put together and about the sections of the paper. We are even thinking of writing our own school paper. Thank you for providing us with this fantastic opportunity."

"I use the newspapers for current events, in my classroom. My students now discuss the world around them. Students have started to participate in events that they read about in the paper. Your paper in my classroom has put the world into my students' hands. As a senior class teacher I know this is the last chance to make real world connections for my students. Your newspaper makes that much easier for me. Thank you for all you do for my students."
Hannah Buford-Gillespie, Copperas Cove High School, AP Macroeconomics, U. S. Government and Economics
"We would like to thank KDH and their sponsors for providing daily newspapers to our Marketing classes at CCHS. We use the papers to start our classes by assigning current events daily from them. We feel this enhances academic knowledge allowing the students to share that knowledge among each other and connecting between what's going on with academics and what's going on in the world around us."
Charlotte Heinze, Copperas Cove High School, Marketing Education Coordinator/DECA Advisor
"Our class loves getting our newspapers. We use them as an instructional tool for both reading and math. We use the Mini-Page during reading because it is always filled with "vivacious" vocabulary and context clues to help determine the meaning of the words. We use them to teach the parts of a newspaper: captions, titles, subtitles, sections, publication dates, etc. We also use random photos from the papers such as sports, advertisements, headlines, etc. to have the kids make inferences and come up with possible main ideas to support the photos. The weather is great also. We have them find the difference in the high and low temperatures and look for patterns in the numbers. We really appreciate our papers and the sponsors who make them possible."
