"I am very proud to be able to offer my students the Killeen Daily Herald each week. We use the newspapers in many ways. We are able to look at the current events and locate specific parts of speech, punctuation, quotation marks, etc. We use them for examples of good pieces of writing, and compare our writing to that of an expert. The newspapers also provide good examples of stories the children can read and summarize. We truly feel honored to have this opportunity, and to be able to provide "real world journalism" for our children. Thank you for supporting this program!"

"My first grade Lampasas classroom receives one copy of the Tuesday edition of the Killeen Daily Herald. We use it to review current events in our area. We particularly enjoy the Kid's Page. At the conclusion of the lesson, one student is awarded the Kid's Page to take home & work the puzzle. We are grateful for the NIE sponsors. Sadly, many of our students have no other exposure to written news."

"I am a 4th grade teacher in Lampasas and I receive the Killeen Daily Herald on Fridays. I love getting the paper for my students because some of them never get exposure to newspapers and it gives them a chance to read the news. The way I use the paper is I have the students read an article and then write a summary about what they read. The students really enjoy reading the paper. Some like the news, others like the comics, and some enjoy reading the ads. I really appreciate getting the paper donated because I could never afford to pay for 22 copies of the paper. Thank you so much for providing this opportunity to my students!"

"Using the newspaper is a great resource in 6th grade Geography. My students read about current events each day. We are able to find where the events took place on the maps in our classroom. We also have used the Economic section to do projects in the classroom. Last month, I introduced my students to Political Cartoons. We then looked at the political cartoons in the paper and discussed their meanings. The newspaper is a wonderful resource to have in my Social Studies class. It is a resource that many students don't get outside of my classroom."
